Following in his father’s heroic footsteps, who was a Navy Veteran, Sgt. Hannon enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at just 17 years old. He began boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, in June of 1997 and later served with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, based out of 33 Area Camp Margarita and Camp Pendleton, California. Sgt. Hannon’s team deployed to Afghanistan following the September 11th, 2001 attacks when he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He served several deployments to Iraq in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 after returning home in April 2002.

He grew to appreciate the brotherhood and common struggles that created strong bonds between each Marine. Throughout his service, Sgt. Hannon earned several honorable achievements, including the role of Reconnaissance Team Leader.

Sgt. Hannon experienced a number of severe health issues as a result of his exposure to toxins while serving. After receiving a diagnosis of cancer in his head, he experienced complications, including losing a limb as a result of a brain tumor. He also experienced severe hearing loss in his left ear, chronic regional pain syndrome, PTSD, and total hearing loss in his right ear. He also endured several operations, which included shaving or removing muscle, nerves, and skin.

The Tunnel to Towers Let Us Do Good Village in Land O’Lakes, Florida, has given Sgt. Hannon the opportunity to live independently, free from the daily limitations imposed by his injuries. Prior to moving into the village, Sgt. Hannon lived with his parents, Robert and Donna Hannon, in Port Orchard, Washington, who stood by his side throughout his recovery journey. With the dedication of his new smart home, his parents are now able to retire, and Sgt. Hannon no longer has to worry about homelessness or living in a space that isn’t accessible. Today, he gives back by supporting fellow Veterans and Gold Star families through volunteer work in adaptive sports and his faith—two passions he looks forward to sharing with his new neighbors in the Let Us Do Good Village.
