Tunnel to Towers Unveils Smart Home Renovations for Injured Army Veteran

A suicide bomber in Afghanistan injured US Army Specialist Perry Young in 2013

MARIETTA, GEORGIA [August 22, 2024] — In a private ceremony outside his Marietta, Georgia home, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation welcomed US Army Specialist Perry Young and his family into their newly remodeled smart home.

SPC Young was born and raised in Calhoun, Georgia. He enlisted in the Army in 2010 and served with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division based out of Fort Stewart, Georgia

In July 2013, SPC Young was on a dismounted patrol in Afghanistan when a suicide bomber detonated his vest. In the ensuing explosion, SPC Young suffered a C4-5 Spinal cord injury, leaving him wheelchair dependent. SPC Young was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for his bravery and sacrifice.

Tunnel to Towers renovated his Marietta home he shares with his wife, Samantha, and two children.

For SPC Young, the renovations mean greater independence for him and his family, “not having to wait for someone to open doors for me has made me so much more self-sufficient to come and go out of my house with no issues,” said Young.

The Tunnel to Towers Smart Home Program builds specially adapted, smart homes to help our most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders live more independently.

With all of our smart homes, we include smart lights, security, and an intercom system throughout. In addition, a wheelchair lift was installed on the front porch to allow for a second means of egress for Young. The main bathroom also got a smart and safety upgrade with a new smart toilet and grab bars for the shower. The existing A/C units were upgraded and a gas powered generator was also installed.

Young added, “we are so appreciative of T2T and how flexible they were throughout the renovation process. They wasted no time getting right to work to make sure we had our home modified as soon as possible.”
