Tunnel to Towers Unveils Home Renovations for Injured Navy Seal

Navy Seal Christopher Serle was injured by an IED in 2012

MINNEOLA, FLORIDA [November 15, 2024] — In a private ceremony, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation unveiled the smart home renovations it made to Navy SEAL Christopher Serle’s home in Minneola, Florida, and announced the mortgage on his home had been paid in full.

“It is beyond a blessing to be able to not worry and focus my time on my family and raising patriotic children,” said Serle.

Serle was born and raised in Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. He felt a call to serve his country after America was attacked on 9/11. He enlisted in the Navy in 2008. In 2012, Serle was on a foot patrol in Afghanistan when a friend and fellow SEAL triggered an improvised explosive device.

Serle lost his vision in his left eye, suffered shrapnel injuries to his right eye and tear ducts, sustained shrapnel to his face and neck, and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He medically retired from the military and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Serle lives with his wife, Heather, and their three children. Serle thanked the Tunnel to Towers Foundation for its support which allows him to make life at home much more manageable and be present with his children.

“Low light conditions have been a struggle for me since my injury and the smart lighting has truly made day-to-day life easier and safer,” added Serle.

The Tunnel to Towers Smart Home Program builds specially adapted, smart homes to help our most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders live more independently.

With his limited vision Tunnel to Towers made changes to make it easier for Serle to navigate his home. The Foundation painted the steps to give them greater contrast and added lights to the walkways in the upstairs hallway, stairs, and hallway to the bedroom to increase visability.

Newly installed smart technology throughout the home enables the thermostat, lights, security, and sound system to be controlled via an app.

Serle and his family promised to pay it forward, “I am extremely thankful for the overwhelming support from T2T and their donors. I will continue to fight to improve every day. I look forward to helping T2T and other Veterans and First responders.
