Tunnel to Towers Unveils Smart Home Renovations for Injured NJ State Trooper

HOWELL, NEW JERSEY [April 16, 2024] – The Tunnel to Towers Foundation welcomed New Jersey State Trooper Sergeant First Class Sean Acker and his family into their newly renovated smart home.

SFC Sean Acker spent his life serving his country and his community. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1998 and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant before retiring from the military. He joined the New Jersey State Police in 2006 and spent seven years on the road before becoming an instructor at the academy.

In February 2022, SFC Acker suffered a severe medical injury, and he spent three weeks fighting for his life in the critical care unit before moving to a long-term rehabilitation facility to work on his cognitive and physical rehabilitation.

The only reason I can go home and be with my family is because of the support that Tunnel to Towers has given us. This dream addition has been built and modified so that I can be comfortable and hopefully progress and thrive alongside my family and friends,” wrote Sean Acker.

The Tunnel to Towers Smart Home Program builds specially adapted, mortgage-free smart homes that help our most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders reclaim their independence.

Tunnel to Towers built a thousand-square-foot addition to his existing home, which includes an elevator, an ADA-compliant master bedroom and bathroom, and a kitchenette.

To make it easier to get into his home, the Foundation removed the existing metal ramp and installed a permanent masonry ramp.

Join us in welcoming this Hero and his family back into their forever home and see the smart technology to help him recover.
