Tunnel to Towers Foundation Pays Off Mortgage and Renovates Injured U.S. Navy and Army Veteran’s Home

Navy and Army Staff Sergeant Jason Livingston was injured in October 2010

GREER, SOUTH CAROLINA [JULY 1, 2025] – In a private ceremony, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation welcomed Navy and Army Staff Sergeant Jason Livingston into his renovated mortgage-free smart home in Greer, South Carolina.

Joining the military was always something SSG Livingston had planned to do. He first enlisted in the Navy in 2000 and re-enlisted in the Army in 2004. SSG Livingston said his greatest  accomplishment from his time in the military was bringing all his fellow soldiers home alive.

On October 1, 2010, SSG Livingston’s unit was attacked by Taliban enemy forces. The blast from the explosions threw him against a building and caused shrapnel to strike his neck and the base of his skull. He suffered two traumatic brain injuries and multiple injuries to his knees and spine.

SSG Livingston’s recovery has been extremely long and challenging, having lost a year’s worth of memories surrounding his injuries. Throughout his journey, his wife, Brandy, and their children have been by his side, offering him unconditional love and support.

“I love my family and my country, and I wouldn’t change anything I have been through. If they let me, I would still be out there with my soldiers right now. I just hope to live a life worthy of the sacrifice made by my brothers and sisters who did not make it home,” said SSG Jason Livingston.

He added that receiving this newly renovated home from Tunnel to Towers has helped remove much of the uncertainty from his and his family’s lives.

The Tunnel to Towers Smart Home Program builds specially adapted, mortgage-free smart homes or renovates existing homes to help our most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders reclaim their day-to-day independence.

The Livingston family home received an entire addition, which includes an ADA-compliant bathroom, a laundry room, and a new master bedroom. In the kitchen, pull-down shelving was installed as well as a house generator, so they are never without power during hurricane season. All Tunnel to Towers smart homes are custom-fit with smart technology, allowing the thermostat, lights, sound system, and security system to be controlled remotely via an app.  “SSG Jason Livington served his country not only in the Navy but also in the Army. It takes a special person to dedicate his life to protecting others, and he did just that.  We are happy to celebrate his life of service and honor his sacrifice by providing him with this mortgage-free smart home.  After all SSG Livingston has done for our country, the least we can do is make sure he lives the rest of his life with dignity and independence,” said Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
