The tour will next visit the West LA Veterans Campus in Los Angeles, California.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA [June 26, 2026] — On Friday, June 26th, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s ‘Steel Across America’ tour visited Sea Salt at the beach in Huntington Beach, California
For the 19th stop on a nationwide tour in honor of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Steel Across America brought a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center to Huntington Beach, offering the local community a rare opportunity to experience this sacred artifact firsthand.
The ceremony was hosted by John LaBarbera, who welcomed guests and guided the afternoon’s ceremonial proceedings. The program opened with a Color Guard and Pipes & Drums Procession, followed by a performance of the national anthem by Bella Popa.
LaBarbera then introduced Chaplain Jeff Lopez, who delivered the invocation and blessing of the steel. Following the blessing, LaBarbera introduced the steel beam and its significance, called for a moment of silent reflection, followed by a performance of Amazing Grace, and oversaw the retirement of colors.
Eric Cortina, Executive Vice President of Development at the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, then took the stage to deliver remarks. Cortina spoke of the Foundation’s ongoing mission to serve the families of fallen first responders and veterans, and the importance of bringing Steel Across America to the Southern California community.
Sheriff Don Barnes then addressed the crowd, honoring the first responders who gave their lives on September 11 and recognizing the law enforcement officers and public safety professionals who serve and protect communities across the country every day. Sheriff Barnes also spoke to the enduring bond between the law enforcement community and the mission of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Senator Tony Strickland then took the stage to deliver remarks, expressing his pride in welcoming Steel Across America to Huntington Beach and speaking to the importance of ensuring that the memory of September 11 and the legacy of those who gave their lives that day are preserved for future generations.
Jen Brekke, Tunnel to Towers Foundation Board Member, then offered acknowledgments and shoutouts, recognizing the sponsors, supporters, dignitaries, and community partners whose generosity and dedication made the event possible.
In a deeply moving moment, Scott Nokes, a Tunnel to Towers Foundation recipient, addressed the crowd and shared his personal story — reminding attendees of the lasting impact of the sacrifices made by the service members and first responders.
Stephen Siller Jr., son of fallen FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, was then introduced to the stage with an FDNY Ceremonial Push-in, a tribute that drew the crowd into a profound moment of reflection and respect. Siller Jr. delivered remarks honoring his father’s legacy and the promise that drives the Steel Across America tour from coast to coast.
“Huntington Beach is known for its spirit, its community, and its pride — and today that pride was on full display,” said Stephen Siller Jr., son of fallen FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller. “Steel Across America is about bringing this beam to every corner of the country and reminding every American that September 11 belongs to all of us. The grief, courage, and responsibility of that day must never be forgotten. We are so grateful to everyone here today who answered that call.”
As part of the ceremonial proceedings, Stephen Siller Jr. invited Senator Tony Strickland to the front of the stage for the steel flag presentation, accompanied by the FDNY. LaBarbera explained the significance of the commemorative steel flag: a custom-built tribute featuring the New York City skyline, with original World Trade Center steel, presented to those who demonstrate honorable dedication to the work and mission of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The flag was received by Senator Strickland on behalf of the Huntington Beach community.
LaBarbera then returned to the stage to deliver closing remarks, bringing the formal program to a close.
The steel is an everlasting reminder of the selfless courage and service of first responders who gave their lives on September 11, 2001, including New York City firefighter Stephen Siller. Recovered from Ground Zero in the days following the attacks by the thousands of first responders who answered the call, the beam stands as a symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and the unbreakable American spirit that emerged from tragedy.
On June 28, Steel Across America will make its next official stop at the West LA Veterans Campus in Los Angeles, California.
