HOME COMPLETED - JUNE 2025

Lieutenant Firefighter Paramedic Michael Wessel’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, as the middle of three brothers, he spent his childhood immersed in sports—baseball, football, and wrestling—and the camaraderie of his church youth group. These early experiences instilled in him a deep appreciation for teamwork, discipline, and service.

At 19, Wessel’s life took a pivotal turn when he met Hillary, the woman who would become his wife and steadfast partner in life’s journey. Over the years, their bond grew stronger, marked by love, shared adventures, and the joy of raising their three children—Logan, Emerson, and Sawyer.

Wessel always knew he wasn’t meant for a desk job. He craved a life where each day presented new challenges and opportunities to make a difference. This passion led him to join the Fire Service on January 1, 2007, where he found a second family among his fellow firefighters and paramedics. His dedication to the profession was evident in every call he responded to, every life he touched, and every moment he spent ensuring the safety of his community.

Wessel’s 15-year career in fire service was marked by notable milestones, including being awarded Firefighter of the Year in 2019 and earning a promotion to Lieutenant in 2020. These recognitions were a testament to his leadership, commitment, and tireless efforts in a field that demanded courage and compassion.

Wessel’s path took an unexpected and devastating turn while he was working for Lake Villa Fire Protection District. Complications from a surgery lead to meningitis and irreversible spinal damage. Despite the diagnosis of Adhesive Arachnoiditis—a severe and progressive condition which changed his life forever, he continues to embody the spirit of a First Responder—steadfast, brave, and dedicated to those around him. His commitment to the community carries on through his service as a Chaplain in the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Family has always been at the heart of Wessel’s life. Despite the challenges he has faced, he remains devoted to spending as much time as possible together. Whether it’s cheering from the sidelines at his children’s sporting events or proudly attending their school functions, he treasures every moment with them. Even in the face of adversity, Wessel’s unwavering spirit and the love he shares with his family continue to shine.
