Army Sergeant First Class Chris Edwards knew from an early age that his life would be defined by service. Driven by a deep sense of duty to his country, he answered that calling first with the Marine Corps, serving from 1992 to 1997, and then with the Army from 1998 to 2013. Over the course of his 20-year military career, Edwards embraced the values of sacrifice, leadership, and teamwork, enjoying the camaraderie he shared with the brothers and sisters who served beside him. Â
While deployed to Iraq, Edwards faced a life-altering challenge. As his Bradley Fighting Vehicle crossed a bridge, it struck an improvised explosive device, causing him catastrophic injuries. He suffered burns over 79% of his body – 72% of them, third-degree – along with a traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and numerous long-term medical complications. His recovery required extensive treatment and surgeries, including the amputation of his right hand and several fingers on his left hand. Â
Edwards’ journey since that day has been one of courage, resilience, and determination. Today, he finds his greatest joy in spending time with his wife, Melody, their grandchildren, and loved ones. He enjoys hunting and fishing and treasures the companionship of his service dog and horse. Â
Edwards is deeply grateful for the financial support he has received from Tunnel to Towers, as well as the ADA home modifications which have provided him with greater independence, safety, and freedom of movement. Just as meaningful to him is becoming part of a community of fellow wounded veterans who understand the challenges and triumphs of the recovery journey.Â
Army Sergeant First Class Chris Edwards shares a simple but powerful message: no matter how difficult today may seem, tomorrow is a new day and a new gift. Â
