United States Air Force Staff Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: November 20, 2023

United States Air Force Staff Sergeant Patrick Shane Goward tragically passed away from a heart attack on November 20, 2023. His passing was attributed to service-connected health issues.

Born in Riverside, California, Goward’s life was defined by movement and adventure, as his family made homes across California, Guam, Nevada, Virginia, Texas, Florida, and Delaware. Each new location offered an exciting adventure and a fresh opportunity for discovery. Growing up alongside his younger brother under the guidance of loving parents, he embraced values of respect, love, and a strong work ethic. Goward’s interests were diverse—ranging from soccer, video games, and building with Legos. As he got older he enjoyed trips to the shooting range, working on vehicles, cooking, fishing, camping, and collecting coins and 90’s memorabilia.

Goward’s decision to join the Air Force was a natural extension of his family’s military heritage. He enlisted in early 2013 and began Basic Training in January of 2014. He discovered his true calling working on F-22 Fighter Jets, a role he embraced with unwavering dedication and a deep sense of duty. Ensuring the safety and readiness of these aircraft became his mission, and he took immense pride in contributing to national security. His commitment extended beyond technical duties—he was respected and admired by colleagues, known as a role model and mentor. In October of 2018, while serving in Panama City, Florida, Goward and his team worked tirelessly to maintain F-22 readiness, remaining at their posts until the final moments before Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 storm, made landfall. In the aftermath, even as his own living situation was severely impacted, he took part in civilian cleanup efforts and supported the community, demonstrating the same courage, dedication, and selflessness that defined his service.

Beyond his remarkable career, Goward found his greatest fulfillment as a husband and father. He met his wife, Kathleen, through a mutual friend, and together they built a family grounded in love. Blessed with two daughters, Emma and Amber, he poured his heart into their lives, cherishing every moment. His family was his greatest treasure, and the love and joy he shared with them will last forever. Goward’s passing leaves a lasting legacy of service, kindness, and devotion. Guided by his principles and his motto, “Treat others the way you want to be treated,” he faced life with resilience, respect, and compassion, performing acts of kindness each day. His life stands as a testament to the profound impact one person can have, leaving the world forever better.
