United States Army Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: July 14, 2003

United States Army Sergeant Michael Tyron Crockett passed away on July 14, 2003 during a patrol ambush in Baghdad, Iraq.

Crockett was born and raised in Soperton, Georgia. He enjoyed playing sports, going to church, fishing and spending time with his family. He always showed the people he loved how much he cared about them. Crockett would send his wife, Tracy, dozens of red roses while he was deployed overseas. A few hours after she received her last bouquet of flowers from him, she received news that her husband had been killed.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division based out of Fort Stewart, Georgia. Notably, when Crockett left for deployment, his last words to his mother were “See you later,” instead of goodbye.

On July 14, 2003, Crockett was returning from an overnight patrol in Baghdad, Iraq when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades. Ten other soldiers in the convoy were wounded, but Crockett passed away from the ambush as he was in a 2.5-ton truck that was hit by the grenade.

United States Army Sergeant Michael Tyron Crockett is survived by his wife, Tracy, his son, Michael Tyron Crockett II who was 3 years old at the time of his father’s death, and Crockett’s mother, Maxine.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the Crockett family mortgage through their Gold Star Family Home Program.
