United States Army Staff Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: August 15, 2017

United States Army Staff Sergeant Michael Nelson tragically lost his life on August 15, 2017 in a training accident when his Blackhawk helicopter crashed in O’ahu, Hawaii.

Nelson grew up in a close-knit, loving family with four sisters and two brothers, where loyalty, hard work, and togetherness were core values. From an early age, he was curious and mechanically inclined, always drawn to engines and anything with moving parts. Nelson often took toys apart just to rebuild them even better. He loved being outdoors and had a fearless streak—racing go-karts, roller skating, skateboarding, and jumping dirt bikes. That same energy carried into his adult life and military service. He made the most of every moment, snowboarding in Colorado, practicing taekwondo in South Korea, learning guitar to play for his wife, and taking up jiu-jitsu.

Driven by a strong sense of purpose, Nelson enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 2006. He was passionate about aviation and admired the discipline and commitment of service members. Nelson was known for his reliability, calmness under pressure, and willingness to help. His attention to detail and dedication ensured the safety of countless soldiers during missions. Nelson was highly decorated for his outstanding service and dedication to his country, receiving numerous awards and commendations, including the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal with three loops, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with award numeral 3, NATO Medal, and the Aviation Badge. These honors not only highlight his exceptional technical skill and courage but also the deep respect and admiration he earned through unwavering dedication and exemplary service throughout his military career.

Nelson and Brittany were introduced through mutual friends on a blind date, and from the very first moment, their connection was undeniable. Nelson’s calm, kind energy and quiet confidence made it easy to connect, and from that night on, they were inseparable. He had a genuine heart, and was a great listener. His sense of humor always left Brittany smiling. They built a beautiful life together filled with love, laughter, and deep connection. One of their most cherished memories was moving to Hawaii after their beautiful daughter, Gabby, was born. Just two weeks after Gabby’s arrival, they hiked Mount Kaʻala—the tallest peak on Oahu—with Gabby along for the journey. Reaching the summit was their first big accomplishment as a family, a powerful symbol of their strength, love, and shared spirit of adventure.
To honor Nelson’s legacy, Brittany and Gabby created a special tradition of taking trips to hike in Hawaii, where they shared many cherished memories. They visit the memorials dedicated to Nelson, including one on Waikiki Beach and another near the helicopter hangars where he served. These visits were deeply emotional but also healing, allowing them to reflect, remember, and celebrate his remarkable life.

United States Army Staff Sergeant Michael Nelson is survived by his loving wife, Brittany and their beautiful daughter, Gabby.
