United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: March 8, 2006

United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry tragically lost his life on March 8, 2006 while disarming an improvised explosive device.
Fry was raised by his loving parents, Beth and Charles, as the second of four children. Growing up in a close-knit family, he shared a strong bond with his older brother and two younger sisters, fostering a deep sense of connection and support. Raised in the country, he enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and playing soccer, as well as playing his guitar. A dedicated student, Fry graduated from high school as salutatorian. During his senior year, he attended his older brother’s Marine Corps boot camp graduation ceremony. This experience had a profound impact on Fry, and he confided in his future wife, Malia, that he felt a calling to become a Marine, inspired by his brother’s path and a strong sense of purpose.
In May 1995, Fry answered the call he felt so deeply and joined the United States Marine Corps. He served with distinction as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician, a role that required exceptional courage, precision, and dedication. Fry was deeply passionate about his work, always putting the safety of others above his own and approaching each mission with unwavering focus and determination. His commitment to excellence did not go unnoticed—he was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon with a “V” device for valor, recognizing his heroic actions under fire. He also graduated with honors from both Staff Academy and EOD School, a testament to his leadership, intelligence, and relentless drive. Fry took immense pride in wearing the uniform and serving his country, and his legacy as a Marine continues to inspire all who knew him.
Fry and Malia met during their freshman year of high school, and they quickly formed a deep and lasting connection. Their shared faith and active involvement in their church brought them even closer, creating a strong foundation for their relationship. Through the years, their love grew stronger, grounded in mutual respect, faith, and commitment. Fry cherished spending quality time at home with his family, enjoying movie nights and playful moments with his children. His daily homecoming was marked by a joyful call of “Where are my monsters?”, prompting a gleeful rush of children and a tickle match in the living room.
After Fry’s passing, Malia worked devotedly to establish the Fry Scholarship, a powerful initiative that expanded the Government Issue Bill to provide education benefits to the children of all fallen service members. Education was always a priority for Fry, and he was determined to ensure that his children had the opportunity to attend college and build successful futures. Malia, deeply committed to honoring his memory, believes that their children—now in college or already graduates—are the living legacy of his sacrifice and love. Every day, they carry forward his values, striving for excellence and embodying the spirit of dedication and purpose Fry instilled in them.
United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry is survived by his loving wife, Malia, and their beautiful children, Kathryn, Gideon, and C.L.
