United States Navy Fireman • Line of Duty Death: August 21, 2023

United States Navy Fireman David R. Hale passed away on August 21, 2023 due to service-related cancer as a result of toxic burn pit exposure.

Hale was born and raised in Sodus, New York. He loved to play sports and excelled in baseball and volleyball, going as far as traveling to Australia for Volleyball after high school. In 2005, Hale and his wife, Carrie, met through mutual friends. They were married in 2008 and shared over 18 years together at the time of his passing. Hale enlisted in the US Navy in September 2000. He loved building relationships with his fellow sailors. Hale was diagnosed with metastatic neuroendocrine cancer in 2022 and, after a courageous nine-month-long battle, sadly passed away.

Carrie currently resides with her children, Grace and Angelo. She enjoys attending events at her local Cancer Support Community Center, as well as spending time with her children. In addition, she is actively working with local and national community members to raise awareness for the PACT Act and veterans’ benefits. Her goal is to eventually volunteer with the veteran population. In the future, Carrie is excited to share her husband’s story and keep his legacy alive by helping veterans and their families. She expresses her eternal gratitude to the Foundation for accepting her family into a community that understands their loss and has the ability to lift some of their feelings of loneliness, and for providing them with the financial support of a mortgage-free home. Finally, Carrie would like others to know that her husband had a quiet strength about him, was soft-spoken, brave, expressed unconditional love, and always put his family first. He was a proud veteran who was honored to have served our country. He was kind, thoughtful, and a true hero.
