On October 1st, 2014, New York City Police Department Sergeant Stephen Patrick Scalza passed away due to 9/11 related illness.

Scalza, of West Islip, New York, joined the NYPD in June of 1992 and worked with them for 20 years. Throughout his career, Scalza proudly served numerous commands including: the 111 and 113 Precincts; the Narcotics Division; the Queens North Narcotics Division; Narcotic Division Queens North Initiative; and most recently the Organized Crime Control Bureau. Scalza made over 200 arrests, has been recognized three times for Excellent Police Duty, four times for Meritorious Police Duty, and received six Commendations before retiring in July of 2012.

New York City Police Department Sergeant Stephen Patrick Scalza is survived by his wife, Denise, and his two children, Ryan and Emma.
