West Douglas County Fire Protection District, Colorado • Line of Duty Death: April 23, 2022

On April 23, 2022 West Douglas County Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Stephen Michael Smith sadly passed away while in the line of duty.

Smith served an honorable 23 years all while being a devoted husband and father, as well as dedicating his free time to his community without compensation. He was a valuable asset to the West Douglas County Fire Protection District with many titles under his belt, including Fire Chief, before serving as Fire Marshal in his final assignment. Smith was among those who responded to a 911 call that reported an electrical box had blown off of a house. After the crew confirmed there were no injuries and no fire had occurred, the electrical utility company was notified to respond. He returned to the station and went home. Minutes later, firefighters were dispatched to a medical emergency where they found Smith unconscious in his car. Life-saving efforts were performed and he was rushed to the hospital where he prematurely lost his life. The West Douglas County Fire Protection District states that Smith was “a selfless champion for all that is good.” He will be severely missed.
