Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency, North Carolina • Line of Duty Death: May 13, 2023

Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency Paramedic Stephen Mark Hayes passed away on May 13, 2023 after suffering a medical emergency while on duty.

Hayes was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and raised in Huntersville, North Carolina along with his younger brother, who he was very close with. During his childhood, Hayes loved to play and watch sports, particularly baseball and basketball. He also loved to listen to music, attend concerts, and go fishing. He and his wife, Taryn, met while attending church.

With a passion to help others and take care of people, Hayes decided to become a paramedic in 1996. He had a servant’s heart, loved helping his community, and always made sure those he aided had the best care possible. His hard work shined bright, with over 25 cardiac saves and achieving the rank of Crew Chief. While responding to a call one day, Hayes suffered a medical emergency pertaining to his heart and tragically lost his life.

Taryn currently resides in North Carolina with her four children. She loves spending time with them and taking them to various parks. She also enjoys the outdoors and decorating. Additionally, Taryn is a foster parent, works for Child Protective Services and volunteers with the kids’ ministry at her local church. In the future, she is excited to continue to watch her children grow and become who they are meant to be. She is grateful to Tunnel to Towers for allowing her to remain in her family home and granting her the opportunity to obtain a new job that will allow her more time with her children now that she is a single parent. Finally, Taryn would like others to know that her husband was the most amazing man she has ever known. He put others before himself on a daily basis and served his family well. Hayes was a loving and caring husband and father.

Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency Paramedic Stephen Mark Hayes is survived by his loving wife, Taryn, his four children, Jackson, Lydia, Cotton, and Kayden.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage of the Hayes family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
