Perryton Fire Department, Texas • Line of Duty Death: October 20, 2024
On October 17, 2024, while battling a structure fire, Assistant Chief Scott Glass and two other firefighters were struck by a 5-inch hose while it was being charged with water. A patrol vehicle ran over the hose and it got stuck under the vehicle, causing it to be dragged. The whiplash hit the firefighters, knocking them over. Glass sustained severe head injuries. He was flown to the hospital where he died three days later, on October 20, 2024. His organs were donated, giving the gift of life to many others. He was 43 years old and served with the Perryton Fire Department in Texas for 17 years. He was also a United States Army veteran.
Glass was born in Shamrock, Texas, to Bob and Janet Glass. He grew up in McLean, Texas, and graduated from McLean High School in 1999. Glass had a passion for muscle cars, buying his dream car, a 1972 SS Chevelle, when he was just 15 years old. He enjoyed taking his Chevelle to the drag strip in Amarillo. Shortly after high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Corporal. He served for four years, and during that time, he was deployed to Kosovo. He was awarded the NATO Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and many other ribbons and awards. After returning home, many wildfires broke out in the Texas panhandle. He went to the local McLean Volunteer Fire Department to see if he could join in. He found his calling and enrolled in the Amarillo Fire Academy, graduating in May 2007 and joining the Perryton Fire EMS in July. He served for 17 years, being promoted to Captain in 2013 and Assistant Chief in 2019. He received his Master Certification in May 2024 from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He was also a certified Fire Officer II and Instructor. He served as a paramedic at Perryton, continuing to serve the community he loved. Every October, he would teach fire prevention at the local elementary schools.
Glass and his wife, Melissa, were married in 2008 and together they had two children, Braden and Sarah. He was a devoted and loving family man, participating in all his children’s activities. He loved a good barbeque and enjoyed watching TV game shows and series. He was humble, had a big heart, and when acting as an instructor, he wanted his students to learn and be proficient in the skill. He was dedicated, honorable, kind, and lived a life of service to his country and his community.
Assistant Chief Scott Glass is survived by his loving wife, Melissa, his son, Braden, his daughter, Sarah, his parents, Bob and Janet Glass, his brother, Andy, and many other cherished family members and friends.
