Madison Police Department, Mississippi • Line of Duty Death: June 1, 2023

Madison Police Department Special Response Team Randy Tyler passed away on June 1, 2023 while in the line of duty.

As a talented carpenter, Tyler loved to work on home improvement projects. He enjoyed camping out in the backyard, playing football and soccer, and working in the garage workshop with his son. On May 27, 2023, Tyler and his wife Tui celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary by planting an oak tree together to watch it grow for many years to come.

Tyler was passionate in serving his community with the police force for over 40 years and SWAT for 34 of those years. At the time of his premature death, he had served with the Madison Police Department for seven years and was the supervisor of the Narcotics Division. Prior to that, he had retired as the police chief of Ridgeland Police Department after serving for 27 years. While in the force, he was regarded as a leader and mentor to his colleagues who would often seek his guidance in challenging situations. On the morning of June 1, 2023, Tyler’s team responded to Brandon, MS to assist other law enforcement teams with a barricaded subject at a residence where there had already been a police involved shooting. During a SWAT standoff later that morning, Officer Tyler was fatally shot by the suspect.

Madison Police Department Special Response Team Randy Tyler is survived by his loving wife, Tui, and his beautiful children.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage of the Tyler family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
