Mitchell Schwartz

New York City EMT/Paramedic Mitchell Schwartz passed away from occupational cancer on May 7, 2024. He fought two cancers, both attributed to time spent in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He was an EMT and Paramedic for close to 25 years, working at NY Presbyterian Hospital and Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He fought a brave a courageous battle with the disease which ultimately took his life. He was 51 years old at the time of his death. 

Schwartz was born in the Bronx, New York. He chose a life of service as an EMT/Paramedic, always striving to help the members of his community. He was dedicated and made an impact on the people of the neighborhoods he served. He saved countless lives and helped thousands of patients over the years. He met and married his wife, Patricia Colaianni, and together they had a daughter, Jenna Michele Schwartz. His family was the center of his life. He became a coach with the New Jersey Intensity Softball organization for 14 years; from the time his daughter was 12 years old. He was dedicated to developing the players, getting to know them and their strengths. He helped them improve, held them to a high standard, and was considered one of the best coaches in the organization. One of his proudest moments was when Jenna started to coach with him. Off the field, he became a beloved friend who shared the joy of all their achievements with members of the organization. Schwartz and his family were avid NY Rangers fans, enjoying the games together and creating cherished memories. As a first responder, during 9/11 or COVID, he was always there to help. He gave all of himself to his family, friends, and community.  

New York City EMT/Paramedic Mitchell Schwartz is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Colaianni, his daughter, Jenna, and many other cherished family members and friends. 

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Schwartz family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
