Nevada Department of Public Safety – Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant Michael Abbate, along with Trooper Alberto Felix, were struck and killed by a drunk driver off Interstate 15 in Las Vegas on November 30, 2023. They had stopped to check on a driver who appeared to be sleeping in his car. Another vehicle hit them and fled the scene. The subject was apprehended six hours later. Sergeant Abbate was 37 years old and had served his department for 9 years, 11 months.

Abbate’s wife, Vanessa, met him at the California Speedway in 2006, when she had gone to cheer on her brother. He was the biggest “gearhead” and loved anything with a motor. He had become an avid go-kart racer in childhood and racing became a major part of his life, working as a mechanic for a race team. They married in 2016 and had a son, Vincent. They had 18 years together, sharing deep love, happiness and a true partnership. Abbate carried his love for driving into his career. He was in charge of the department’s driver education program, which included training both officers and cadets. After his death, his wife received his Nevada State Police Medal of Valor. He served his community with humility, courage and confidence. He was an outstanding leader, husband, father, son and friend.

Nevada Department of Public Safety – Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant Michael Abbate is survived by his loving wife, Vanessa, son, Vincent, his parents, his sister, and many cherished family members and friends.
