Village of Dolton Fire Department, Illinois • Line of Duty Death: June 10, 2017

Firefighter/EMT Lawrence W. Matthews Jr., a devoted husband and father, made the ultimate sacrifice on June 10, 2017 while in the line of duty, suffering a heart attack while fighting a fire. He worked for the Village of Dolton Fire Department in Illinois and also served in the US Army National Guard.

Matthews grew up in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, with his Mother, brothers and family members. He also spent some time living with his Father as well. He played football as a young boy and played basketball throughout his teen years. He loved being outdoors and attending Church with the family.

On June 2, 2007, Matthews was given a second chance at life when he became a heart transplant recipient at the University of Chicago Hospital. It was there, in the Cardiology Clinic, that he met his future wife, Rachel. Two years later, with the approval of his physicians, on September 9, 2009, he achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. He said he was blessed with a new heart and a new life, and wanted to help others and serve his community, as he did with courage and purpose. He served as the public safety education officer for the Village of Dolton. He dressed as Sparky the dog for the school children, teaching them about fire safety. He enjoyed being involved in community events and played Santa Claus for the annual Christmas parade. He created and supported sports tournaments in the community, coaching Little League baseball and basketball.

Matthews and Rachel were married and had two children together. Matthews was also a father to his two step-children. He had a vision for their life together and how their children would excel in life. He was ambitious and a fighter who was determined to succeed. He was a proud firefighter, and his career provided stability for his family. He loved the brotherhood of the department and was a great friend, mentor and inspiration to many. His courage, ambition, faith and service to others will never be forgotten. Rachel now volunteers with a Foundation that serves and supports the families of Fallen Heroes across the country. She enjoys sharing her story through writing and speaking. She said Matthew’s sacrifice will never be forgotten and he will always be their forever hero.

Firefighter/EMT Lawrence W. Matthews Jr. is survived by his wife Rachel and four children.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage of the Matthews family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
