Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland ● Line of Duty Death: March 2, 2022

Frederick, Maryland Deputy First Class Kenneth Olander died on March 2nd, 2022 from complications as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Olander was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Colonel Leroy Hugh Olander and Mary Elizabeth Olander. Olander’s family relocated multiple times throughout his childhood, but some of his greatest memories date back to his time at Heidelberg Castle, a high school for children of American military members located in Germany. While in Germany, Olander tried out for a local road cycling club where he fell in love with biking.

Prior to Olander’s extensive career with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, he followed in his father’s footsteps by enlisting in the United States Army where he worked as a military police officer for six years. Olander then served with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office for over 32 years fulfilling roles such as narcotics detective, patrol operations deputy, and most recently, the community deputy for Myersville, Maryland. He also served as a state certified police instructor with a specialization in DUI enforcement, Firearms, Drug Recognition Expert, Standardized Field Sobriety Training, and the Specialized Police Bicycle Unit.

Deputy First Class Kenneth Olander is survived by his wife, Samantha, and children, Hugh, Sophia, and Bailey.
