Detective Joseph Seals, a 13-year veteran of the Jersey City Police Department, was shot and killed on December 10, 2019 during a confrontation with armed gunmen in a stolen van. The ensuing shootout between the suspects and police claimed the lives of three civilians, and injured several other officers.
Detective Seals, 40, joined the Jersey City Police Department in 2006 and was promoted to Detective in 2017. He was assigned to the city’s cease-fire unit, and authorities say dozens of guns were taken off the streets under his watch.
The North Arlington, New Jersey resident left behind his wife and five children.
