Philadelphia Police Department, Pennsylvania • Line of Duty Death: September 10, 2024

Police Officer Jaime Junior Roman of the Philadelphia Police Department in Pennsylvania was shot on June 22, 2024, during a confrontation with a driver who attempted to flee. During the encounter, the suspect shot Officer Roman in the neck. He was rushed to the hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries but never recovered. After nearly three months in the hospital, Officer Roman passed away on September 10, 2024. He was 31 years old and had served in the department for nearly seven years. In honor of his service and sacrifice, he was posthumously promoted to Sergeant.

Roman was born in Camden, New Jersey, and later moved just across the bridge to Philadelphia, where he grew up. He attended Cayuga Elementary School, Robert Clemente School, and graduated from Nueva Esperanza High School in 2011. He was known for his energy and sense of humor, always on the move and bringing joy to those around him. In high school, he ran cross-country and enjoyed riding his bike throughout the city with friends. From a young age, Roman looked for ways to give back to his community. As a teenager, he participated in the Work Ready program, where he demonstrated strong drive, responsibility, and a natural ability to connect with others. He also served as a youth camp leader where he guided and inspired younger children in his community.

Roman was inspired to become a police officer by a deep, genuine desire to protect and serve others. His journey came full circle when he returned to serve in the Philadelphia neighborhood where he grew up—a community that, while challenging at times, played a significant role in shaping who he became. Walking those same streets in uniform held special meaning for him; it was never just about policing, but about being present and making a difference. He took time to connect with people, encouraging them to see their potential and supporting them in reaching their goals. He also gave back in tangible ways, purchasing backpacks and school supplies for children at local schools to ensure they felt prepared and cared for. Roman truly had a heart of gold. Following his passing, he was honored with several posthumous awards in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice, including the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor.

Roman met his future wife, Jazmin, at the Philadelphia Police Academy while she was preparing for the physical exam. Always eager to help, he offered to support her training, and their connection quickly grew. They later married and built a life together, raising their two children, Evelina and Jaime II. He was a loving husband and devoted father, always present and deeply involved in their lives. He shared his love for Philadelphia sports teams with his son and cherished time spent building Legos together. Roman’s legacy is one of courage, love, and selfless service. To his friends and community, he was a guiding light who inspired others to rise above their circumstances and make a difference.

Police Officer Jaime Roman is survived by his loving wife, Jazmin, their children, Evelina and Jaime II, and many cherished family members and friends.
