Sergeant Fredrick Coleman, Sr., a correctional officer with the Arkansas Department of Correction, Cummins Unit, Grady, Arkansas, died on July 31, 2025, responding to a call for all-code assistance while on duty at the facility. During his response to aid a fellow officer, he collapsed from a heart attack and struck his head on the floor. Fellow staff members immediately rendered aid, but, ultimately, he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Coleman was 45 years old and had served the Cummins Unit, a high-security state prison in Lincoln County, for 15 years.Â
Coleman was born in Dermott, Arkansas, to Oscar Coleman, Jr. and Geraldine Coleman. He was the youngest of 14 children. He was raised in a loving, God-fearing family, in which his parents were married for over 30 years. They built a foundation of faith, love and commitment that shaped the man he became. He graduated from Dermott High School in 2000. He became a first responder because he wanted to make a difference in people’s lives during some of their most difficult moments. He wanted a career built on service, compassion, and courage. He joined the Arkansas Department of Correction in 2010 and became known for his strength, kindness, hard work, and dedication to the agency and to his fellow officers. He served all 15 years at the Cummins Unit, rising to the rank of Sergeant. He was recognized for his exceptional service in 2022 with the Director’s Outstanding Service Award, for his valuable contributions at Cummins. In addition to his career in corrections, he was a passionate entrepreneur. In 2020, he founded Coleman’s Lawn Service, where he proudly worked as the sole owner and operator, serving his community with diligence and pride. His favorite pastime was playing pool, playing both friendly matches and competitive games. He found joy and relaxation in the sport.Â
In 2008, he married the love of his life, Venus Presley. They met at his family’s restaurant, Coleman’s BBQ. Venus was drawn to how humble he was, and he was drawn to her outgoing personality. Their connection was built on love, friendship, and a bond no one could break. He became the father of six children: Marcus Presley, Zarriah Bryant, Fredrick Coleman, Jr., Kendrick Coleman, Zederick Coleman, and Kyleigh Coleman. He was also the proud grandfather of Braylie Moore and Jai’lei Coleman. His children and granddaughters brought him great joy. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who loved his family deeply, cared for others, and always showed up when needed. He was a one-of-a-kind man, with a heart of gold. Â
Sergeant Fredrick Coleman, Sr. is survived by his loving wife, Venus Presley, six children, two grandchildren, his siblings, and many other cherished family members and friends.Â
