Firefighter Deo Lall Jr., of the FDNY Engine 153 – Tower Ladder 77, “The Broad Street Bullies,” passed away on March 27, 2024, from occupational cancer. Lall was diagnosed with Myxoid Liposarcoma – a cancer of the left thigh – in the fall of 2022. He fought this very aggressive disease with courage and dignity. He suffered through surgeries, fusions, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. At the time of his death, he was 38 years old and had served with the FDNY for 10 years.
Lall was a lifelong Staten Islander, born to Diane and Deo Lall. He grew up in New Springville, graduating from Port Richmond High School. He was a standout on the Port Richmond football team, where his strong leadership skills were evident to his coaches and teammates. He was elected to be the team’s captain. He then pursued a career in the medical field, graduating from Hudson School of Radiology. His desire to help people led him to a position at Staten Island University Hospital as an Interventional Radiologic Technologist, a highly specialized role within the field. His cheerful smile and good humor calmed the most nervous patients. His professional expertise and technical skills were vital during crucial emergency situations. These life experiences helped him to amass the attributes and skills of an athlete, leader, caregiver, and first responder. He pursued a career with the FDNY, and after completing the competitive testing and rigorous training, he was assigned to Engine 153 in Staten Island. He became the “go-to” guy and quickly fit in with his work ethic and infectious humor. He was involved in many emergencies throughout his career, always giving it his all. He was also assigned the position of engine chauffeur, a position that is highly regarded in firefighter duties. He was always willing to help, very resourceful in finding solutions to problems, and could fix things with ease. He was the epitome of what a firefighter should be.
Lall met his future wife, Devon, when they both worked as radiologic technologists. They married and had two children, Deo Lall III and Luca Lall. They were the light of his life. He cherished every moment spent with his boys. He was a loving husband and father with an endearing sense of humor. He was loved by all who knew him.
Firefighter Deo Lall Jr. is survived by his loving wife, Devon, his sons, Deo III and Luca, and many other cherished family members and friends.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Lall family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
