Norwalk Fire Department, Connecticut • Line of Duty Death: February 6, 2023

830 Norwalk Fire Department Firefighter Craig Anthony Saris passed away on February 6, 2023 after his battle with service-related cancer.

Saris was born in and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He also spent parts of his childhood in Rockland County, New York and Norwalk, Connecticut. His childhood was challenging, having lost his parents at a young age. Through navigating his grief, he was able to find joy from vintage cars, motocross, snowmobiling and spending time around a campfire. Wanting to make his family proud and make something of himself, he began working as soon as he was able. Saris and his wife, Amy, met on Saint Patrick’s Day at an Irish Bar in South Norwalk, Connecticut. After sharing an instant connection, the pair began their relationship and were later married.

Having been empathetic by nature, combined with his passion to help others, Saris decided he wanted to become a firefighter. He officially joined the fire department in 1998 and loved everything about it. The sense of family and belonging meant a great deal to Saris as he struggled with those things during his childhood. His goals were to gain the respect of his fellow firefighters, make a difference in the lives of others, and make his family proud of how hard he had worked and what he had accomplished. Throughout his career, Saris was awarded with a Commendation medal for two separate life-saving performances. Saris was diagnosed with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer in his liver, attributed to his service, and sadly passed away in February of 2023.

Amy currently resides in Connecticut with her ten-year-old twins. She works as a literacy para educator at an elementary school and is involved in the PTA at her children’s school. Amy enjoys teaching, working with children, spending time with her family and taking on new adventures. In the future, she is excited to embrace hope for her children’s future and to make their father proud. Amy is eternally grateful to Tunnel to Towers for giving her the ability to remain in the home she and her husband chose for their children to grow up in and for the strength to tackle each day. Finally, Amy would like others to know that her husband emulated resilience and strength. Saris’ ability to be hopeful for everything in his life never faltered. His legacy will live on in the walls of the fire department forever. He is greatly missed.

830 Norwalk Fire Department Firefighter Craig Anthony Saris is survived by his loving wife, Amy, his children, his aunts, Marilyn and Irene, his sister-in-law, Julie, and his local 830 firefighter family.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage of the Saris family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
