United States Army • Line of Duty Death: July 25, 2021

On July 25th, 2021, Deputy Sheriff with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and former United States Army Sergeant Courtney Nicole Couch was out paddleboarding with her son and her sister when she sprang into action to try to help a young child. In the process Couch slipped off her paddleboard and drowned.

Couch was born in Palm Springs, California and was raised in Grants Pass, Oregon. She grew up playing softball, reading, hiking, and being outdoors as much as possible. Couch felt an obligation to serve her country following the events of 9/11. She met her husband, Ian, a US Army specialist, while in Afghanistan serving with the 320th Psychological Operations unit for the United States Army. She then began her career with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office on March 25th, 2011 and served the citizens of her community to the best of her ability.

Deputy Sheriff and U.S. Army Sergeant Courtney Couch is survived by her husband, Ian, and their son Jack. The Couch family would like to extend their gratitude to sister Alyssa Harpool, late father Gaylon Couch, brother in law Cay Harpool, nephew Hudson Harpool, and niece Charlotte Harpool.
