Born from the tragedy of 9/11, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation carries out its mission to "do good," by providing mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and by building specially-adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. Tunnel to Towers is also committed to eradicating veteran homelessness and helping America to Never Forget September 11, 2001.

New York City Police Department, New York • Line of Duty Death: September 20, 2022
On September 20, 2022, New York City Police Officer Brian J. Rutherford of Transit Bureau passed away due to a 9/11-related illness.
Rutherford was born in Staten Island, New York but grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he could be found playing with his friends outside from the early hours of the morning to the late hours of the evening. He bonded with his three siblings well, as they were all very close in age. Rutherford loved and participated in all things baseball, ice hockey, and roller hockey.
Rutherford was inspired to become a police officer by his father, who was a retired Navy Officer. Beginning his career in December of 1997, his goals were to serve his community, help others, and keep people safe. During his 25 years of service, Rutherford received various medals of recognition, including one medal of Meritorious Police Duty and three medals of Excellence Police Duty.
Rutherford was very active, generous, loving, and loyal to not only his NYPD family, but to his wife and three children. He loved being an active mentor and coach in his childrens’ and nephews’ sports teams, including basketball and flag football. Rutherford’s wife loves seeing the lasting impact that he had on his children as they continue to grow.
