New York City Fire Department, New York • Line of Duty Death: September 7, 2024

Retired New York City Fire Department (FDNY) EMS Lieutenant Anthony S. Cozzino responded to the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001. He took part in the heroic rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. He was diagnosed with Lung Cancer as a result of his work at the scene. He succumbed to his WTC-related illness on September 7, 2024 at the age of 51. He had served the department for 26 years, mostly out of Station 43 in Brooklyn.

Cozzino was born in New York City and lived in the Yorkville section of Manhattan with his parents Evelyn and Michael and his sisters Cynthia and Felicia. He attended St. Stephen of Hungary Elementary School and graduated High School from LaSalle Academy in 1991. During his youth, he made countless lifelong friends that became family and memories that would last a lifetime.

Cozzino’s strong desire to protect people and his selfless, giving nature led him to his highly decorated, honorable 26 year career with the FDNY, where his motto was “find one, be one, teach one”. Starting in the South Bronx at Battalion 14 as an EMT in 1997, he was quickly promoted to Paramedic and became a Lieutenant in 2006. He served the bulk of his time at Battalion 43 in Coney Island, a place that was in his heart and became an integral part of his legacy. Throughout his tenure with the FDNY, he served as a Haz-Tac Paramedic, was part of the FDNY Dignitary Protection Unit and the Division 5 Counter Terrorism Task Force. He was a proud member of the FDNY EMS Pipes and Drums Band, playing the bagpipes at countless ceremonies. He was awarded many medals and commendations throughout the years. He was highly respected and loved by many and touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with.

Cozzino met his wife, Lori, in 2007. His wittiness, confidence, intelligence and charming sense of humor quickly won her over. They married in 2009 and raised three children, Nicholas, Anthony, and Isabella. His family was his world and he spent his time teaching them to be strong and help make this world a better place. They will surely carry on his legacy and his presence will be with them forever.
