Tunnel to Towers Foundation Pays Off Mortgage, Completes Accessibility Renovations for Injured Colorado Veteran

Foundation fulfils mortgage for Army Sergeant Major Daniel Hendrix and his family in Monument, Colorado

MONUMENT, COLORADO [November 6, 2026] — The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Monument, Colorado, home of Army Sergeant Major Daniel Hendrix and completed accessibility renovations to help him navigate his home more independently following a parachute accident that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee.

“It’s like my home has doubled in size, now that I can navigate my entire home,” SGM Hendrix said. “It feels like life just got easier, even if now I don’t have an excuse not to help with the laundry anymore.”

“It’s like my home has doubled in size, now that I can navigate my entire home,” said MSG Hendrix, he joked, “It feels like life just got easier, even if now I don’t have an excuse not to help with the laundry anymore.”

SGM Hendrix comes from a family with a proud tradition of military service. His grandfather served in the Army, and other family members have served in the Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1993 and served for more than two decades, including deployments to Bosnia, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq.

“I loved being part of the world’s strongest team and serving something greater than my own self-interest,” SGM Hendrix said. “Most of all, I cherish the relationships I built with my fellow soldiers throughout my career.”

In 2012, SGM Hendrix was injured in a parachute accident that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee.

On Memorial Day 2025, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation surprised SGM Hendrix and his family during the pre-game ceremony of the Mets vs White Sox game at Citi Field announcing that they had been selected for the Foundation’s Smart Home Program.

“I was in shock for a while…the mortgage getting paid alone is a life changer; it means so many less restrictions for me and my family,” said SGM Hendrix.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Smart Home Program renovates and modifies existing homes to create fully accessible, mortgage-free smart homes for the nation’s most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.

At the Hendrix family’s home, the Foundation completed several modifications to improve accessibility and independence, including renovating the downstairs bathroom, installing an accessible exterior door leading to the deck, modifying the laundry room, installing a stair lift and adding a whole-house generator for emergencies.

Smart-home technology installed throughout the home allows SGM Hendrix and his family to remotely manage essential features, including lighting, temperature controls, audio, and the home security system, through an app.

This year America marked 25 years since the events of September 11th, when FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to Ground Zero and gave up his life while saving others.

To honor the anniversary the Tunnel to Towers Foundation is committed to delivering 343 mortgage-free homes to America’s heroes in honor of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives that tragic day.
