HOME COMPLETED - OCTOBER 2026

Chicago Police Department Police Officer Carlos A.Yanez Jr. learned to work hard and play hard as a member of his close-knit family. Following in the footsteps of his father and stepmother who were police officers, he joined the force in August 2014 with a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Yanez served in various units, including the Bike Unit, Tactical Unit, and Saturation Unit, and as District Police Officer and a member of the Community Safety Team. He valued making a positive impact on the community and enjoyed the camaraderie within the units in which he served.

In an instant, Yanez’s life was forever changed when he was shot multiple times during a traffic stop. Struck four times in the head and once in the right shoulder, he suffered devastating injuries in an attack that also claimed the life of his partner, Ella French. Yanez lost his right eye, sustained fractures to the right side of his face, and endured a traumatic brain injury, damage to his eardrum, and partial paralysis on the left side of his body. He also faced significant cognitive challenges, including difficulties with executive functioning and word retrieval, as well as the lasting effects of PTSD.

Despite these life-altering injuries and the demands of extensive, long-term rehabilitation, Yanez has remained remarkably resilient. He approaches each day with gratitude and a positive outlook, drawing strength from his recovery and the unwavering support of others. He is especially thankful for the compassion and generosity shown to him and his family during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Today, Yanez still contributes in a meaningful way to his brothers and sisters in blue, through his position as a trustee and wellness advocate for lodge 7 and as a volunteer with Light the Line, an organization that focuses on the well-being of officers. Yanez supports Gold Star families and First Responders, sharing his experience and wisdom with them. He enjoys spending time with his family, including his two dogs, and is especially excited to be part of his son’s life as he watches him grow.

The financial support provided by Tunnel to Towers, combined with the comfort, independence, and accessibility of an ADA modified home, has lifted a tremendous burden from Yanez and his family. He remains deeply grateful for these life-changing gifts.

Chicago Police Department Police Officer Carlos A.Yanez Jr. believes law enforcement is more than a profession, it is a calling. Despite the life-altering challenges he has endured, he says he would choose the same path again. His advice to others is simple: take life one day at a time and keep your focus on what matters most.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has provided Chicago Police Department Police Officer Carlos A. Yanez Jr. with a mortgage-free smart home through the Smart Home Program.
