United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Mike Delancey, a Tunnel to Towers Smart Home Program recipient, partnered with City of Pinellas Park to build Wounded Warriors Abilities (WWAR) Ranch in 2015, an accessible park for injured veterans and civilians to come together and be active.

11 years prior, however, in 2004, Delancey had a desire to see the world beyond his hometown and decided to enlist in the USMC. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, India Company, where he found a deep sense of brotherhood — an aspect of military life he cherished most. His service took him to both Afghanistan and Iraq.

While deployed in Iraq, Delancey was struck by a sniper’s round that left him a T-6 complete paraplegic, paralyzed from the chest down.

Despite his injuries, Delancey found a second purpose in helping veterans like himself stay active and engaged. He founded WWAR, an ADA City Park, at Lurie Park in the Tampa Bay Area for wounded warriors, veterans, their families, and civilians to enjoy. The park is furnished with specialist fitness equipment, offers recreational activities such as hand cycling, walking and running, fishing, workout stations, and a multi-purpose sports court, designed for wheelchair sports and events. Additionally, the outdoor space gives parkgoers an opportunity to reconnect and share experiences.
