Barnstable Police Department, Massachusetts • Line of Duty Death: July 7, 2019

Sergeant Jason Sturgis, a 19-year veteran of the Barnstable Police Department in Massachusetts, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from a job-related heart attack on July 7, 2019. He was 42 years old and was known as a dedicated officer with an unwavering commitment to public service.

Sturgis was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and grew up in Palatine, Illinois. His family returned to Massachusetts, settling in West Barnstable. He graduated from Barnstable High School, making him the fourth generation of Sturgis’s to do so. He began his law enforcement career with the Barnstable Police Department in 1994 and attended college while working and raising a family. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from Curry College, then returned to earn a master’s degree in criminal justice. He was intensely dedicated and proud to be a police officer. He strived to be educated in every aspect of his work. In 2017, Sturgis was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and commanded several shifts at the department. He enjoyed his role as a leader, supervising and mentoring the men and women under his command. He held many positions throughout his career, including patrolling the streets of Hyannis in the bicycle division and working with the detectives. He was most passionate about working in the Community Impact Unit where he advocated for those who could not seek help on their own. He dedicated his time and professionalism to assisting the homeless and those who suffer from physical, mental, or behavioral deficiencies. His ability to change people’s lives for the better was the true measure of his role as a man and a police officer. He collaborated with local organizations in Cape Cod to address the needs of the homeless. He touched many lives both at Barnstable PD, and in the community. He inspired all who wear the badge.

Sturgis married his wife, Sarah, and together they had three children: Charlotte, Keith, and Paige. He loved them deeply, raising them in West Barnstable, and was involved in their sports and school activities. He was active in his son’s hockey program and his daughter’s athletic cheer competitions. He was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed playing golf, boating, and spending time with his family and friends at Sandy Neck Beach, where he found peace and solace.

Sergeant Jason Sturgis is survived by his wife, Sarah, his children, Charlotte, Keith and Paige, his parents, Barry and Nancy Sturgis, his brother, Barry Jr., his sisters, Kimberly and Allison, and many other cherished family members and friends.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Sturgis family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.Â
