Rostraver West Newton Emergency Services, Pennsylvania • Line of Duty Death: January 5, 2020
Paramedic Supervisor Matthew Smelser of the Rostraver West Newton Emergency Services in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer while assisting a motorist on the highway. He was aiding the injured person and was outside the ambulance when he was struck, possibly due to icy road conditions. He was a well-respected member of Emergency Services for 24 years. He was 43 years old at the time of his passing.Â
Smelser was born in Toledo, Ohio, to parents, Charles Thomas and Sandra Spivey. He graduated from Frazier High School in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania. He continued his education by taking paramedic and EMT courses. He dedicated his life to service for others, working for the Rostraver West Newton EMS Department for 24 years, becoming a supervisor. His leadership and mentorship touched the lives of so many colleagues, teaching Paramedics and EMT’s to be the best they could be. He was the person you wanted to show up when you were in need. He was patient, calm, and professional. He saved many lives throughout his career and always made you feel that he cared about you. He also worked for the University of Pittsburg Medical Center’s Paramedic Response Unit and was a decorated member of the UPMC Search and Rescue Unit, along with his K-9 Mondo.Â
Smelser married his wife, Lynn, in May of 2000, and together they had two children, Logan and Adriana. He was a devoted and loving father and husband. He enjoyed going to the shooting range and recently joined a local gun club. He also enjoyed golfing, swimming, and being outdoors, riding quads with his son Logan. He was loved and admired by his coworkers and appreciated by the community he served. He was the paramedic you strived to be like. He believed time was not measured by the years you live, but by the deeds that you do and the joy you bring to others.Â
Paramedic Supervisor Matthew Smelser is survived by his loving wife, Lynn, his son, Logan, his daughter, Adriana, and many other cherished family members and friends.Â
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Smelser family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.Â
