New York City Fire Department, New York • Line of Duty Death: November 13, 2024
On November 13, 2024, New York City Fire Department Firefighter Tony Mastrelli succumbed to cancer he developed due to his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. When he arrived at Ground Zero, he was exposed to toxic debris that left him with long-term health effects. He had served with the FDNY for 31 years and was 58 years old. Â
Mastrelli was born in Maspeth, New York, and grew up in Farmingdale. He attended Half Hollow Hills West High School, where he played football and lacrosse. Football became a lifetime passion for him, beginning at the age of seven with the Farmingdale Hawks. He graduated from the State University of New York, Cortland, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology. While there, he played football for the Red Dragons, forming lifelong friendships. Inspired by his uncle, Mastrelli joined the Fire Department of New York in August 1991. He served in Engine 202, transferred to Ladder48/Engine 56, then to Engine 313/Ladder 164. He retired from Hazmat 1 on December 22, 2022. No matter his station, he always made time to honor traditions, never missing a Memorial Day event or the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. He was a leader for the FDNY Bravest Football Team – 18 years as a player, five as a coach, then with the alumni association. The annual game of FDNY vs NYPD was the highlight of the year for him. Mastrelli also served as a volunteer coach for the East Farmingdale Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., where he was known as a dedicated leader and a true pillar of the community. For 20 years, he coached the Farmingdale Hawks guiding and inspiring countless young athletes. He instilled pride, discipline, and dedication, contributing to the ongoing success of the football program. After his passing, the FDNY Foundation established the Anthony Mastrelli Children’s Scholarship Fund to honor his legacy. He proudly served as a firefighter with the FDNY, with courage, sacrifice and an unwavering dedication to protect others. Â
Mastrelli married his wife, Marcie, and had a blended family of three children: Kyle and Alexis, from his previous marriage and the son he had with Marcie, Cameron. He was a devoted husband and father who loved being with his family. He coached his sons in football and was proud of all they achieved. His son Cameron plays defensive back and wide receiver for the Farmingdale High School football team.Â
Firefighter Tony Mastrelli is survived by his loving wife, Marcie, his children, Kyle, Alexis, and Cameron, his father, Anthony, his brother, Scott, who is a retired member of the FDNY, and many other cherished family members and friends.Â
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Mastrelli family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.Â
