Minneapolis Police Department, Minnesota • Line of Duty Death: May 30, 2024

On May 30, 2024, a gunman shot and killed two people in an apartment complex and then attempted to steal an electric scooter outside. A passerby witnessed the robbery in progress and attempted to intervene while still in his vehicle, which struck the gunman, injuring him. While injured, he shot and wounded a passerby who had stopped to render aid. Police Officer Jamal Mitchell was the first responding officer on the scene. The gunman and the passerby he shot were lying in the street. Mitchell immediately went to render aid to them and was shot and killed by the gunman. Mitchell was 36 years old and had served the Minneapolis Police Department in Minnesota for two years.

Mitchell was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to Janet Raper-Edwards and Frank Mitchell, Jr. He graduated from Wilbur Cross High School and received his associate’s degree in law enforcement at Rasmussen University. He moved to Maple Grove, Minnesota, in 2018, where he worked as an Officer with the Airport Police at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport. He joined the Minneapolis Police Department in 2022 and received the Officer of the Month Award in February 2023. On his third day working with the department, he rescued an elderly couple from a burning home. In 2024, he was posthumously awarded the Minnesota Police Department Medal of Honor and Purple Heart. In addition, he received the Officer of the Year award posthumously from the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Mitchell and his loving partner, Tori Myslajek, had four children: Koen Schweiger and Jalen, Kaden, and Macen Mitchell. He was a loving father who loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed playing basketball and working out at the gym. He volunteered at his church, at soup kitchens, with the Boy Scouts and with environmental agencies.

Police Officer Jamal Mitchell is survived by his loving partner, Tori Myslajek, their four children, Koen, Jalen, Kaden and Macen, his mother, Janet Raper-Edwards, father, Frank Mitchell, Jr., siblings, Marquis, Janiece, Janet, his twin Jamel, Javaris, and Kevaughna, several other siblings on his father’s side, and many cherished family members and friends.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Mitchell family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
