Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, Florida • Line of Duty Death: December 15, 2024
Sergeant Elio Diaz of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in Florida was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Charlotte Harbor. Diaz spoke to the driver, who lived in his car. He talked to him for over an hour, trying to help him with an insurance issue. The man feared his car would be towed. Suddenly, the driver pulled out a rifle and fired at Diaz before fleeing. Diaz was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. He was 40 years old and had served his department for 11 years.
Diaz came to the United States from Cuba at the age of nine, along with his parents and older sister. They settled in Miami, Florida, where he was raised and graduated from high school. They then relocated to Cape Coral, Florida, and remained there throughout his life. He enjoyed all sports, being out on the water, fishing, taking care of his pet birds, and running around with his cousins. As a young adult, he enjoyed riding motorcycles throughout town.
Diaz was inspired to become a first responder when hearing stories about his grandfather. He played cops and robbers any chance he got. From a young age, he had a desire to help those around him. He joined the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in September 2013. He made a great impact on others, treating everyone with dignity and respect. His leadership abilities were evident in everything he did. He led by example – with integrity, compassion and a strong sense of responsibility. He was deeply dedicated to the badge he wore, not just as a symbol of authority, but as a commitment to serve and protect with honor. Powerful stories about him were told even by those he arrested. He treated them with compassion, sometimes offering them his famous Cuban coffee, and, more importantly, a listening ear. In those moments, he reminded people of their worth and their ability to do better. Many people have shared stories that, because of him, they became better individuals, better spouses, and better parents. He was a role model to all. In 2019, Diaz was named Deputy of the Year. He was awarded a certificate of appreciated from the U.S. Border Patrol – Miami Sector – in November 2024. Posthumously, he was made a Sergeant, received the Medal of Honor from the American Police Hall of Fame, and received the Medal of Valor from the Fraternal Order of Police.
Diaz met his future wife, Yesenia, at a car dealership where he worked. Not only did he sell her first car, but he also stole her heart right then and there. They built a friendship and natural trust with one another, truly enjoying each other’s company. Everything they did was guided by their faith in God. They married and raised four children. In June of 2024, they became grandparents. Diaz felt his life was blessed and filled with joy. It was a life they built side by side. He carried a light that never dimmed, always positive, always smiling, with unwavering faith in people. He stood firm in his values, honesty, leadership, kindness, and strength. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In his honor, with the help of the community, the family has planted over one hundred trees, building a memorial forest. A highway was dedicated in his name, known as the Sgt. Diaz Memorial Highway, ensuring that his name and service will always be remembered. At the Boys and Girls Club, where he loved to volunteer, they created a “Christmas with Sgt. Diaz” annual event, with the family delivering the gifts to the children that they wished for on their Christmas lists.
Sgt. Elio Diaz is survived by his loving wife, Yesenia Gonzalez, two sons, Xaviel and Nathaniel, two daughters, Nayleshka Luna and Kiara Torres, and many other cherished family members and friends.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Diaz family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
