Rancho Adobe Fire District, California • Line of Duty Death: August 16, 2024
On August 16, 2024, Fire Captain Kyle Heard suffered a job-related medical emergency and suddenly passed away. He had served with the Rancho Adobe Fire District in California for 21 years and was 43 years old.Â
Heard was born in Sonoma County, California, and lived there his entire life. As a young boy, he excelled in sports and was a camp counselor. He built lasting relationships with fellow counselors as well as the kids. He knew he would never want to work a desk job as a career. His father passed away from cancer in 2016, and Kyle took it upon himself to make sure his mother and sister still felt loved and supported. He loved helping people and feeling like he was making a difference. Â
Heard joined the Rancho Adobe Fire Department in 2003, earning the rank of Engineer in 2013 and Captain in 2023. He loved the excitement, the physical demand, and the constant draw to better himself. His calm demeaner lent itself to a field filled with high-pressure situations. His job became his second family. He poured everything into becoming the best firefighter he could be, always striving toward his goal of becoming Captain. Heard made an impact not just through the calls he responded to, but through the way he showed up for his crew. He built strong bonds, mentored others, and created a sense of family that continues to carry on. During his career, he received the Firefighter of the Year award and was promoted to Captain in 2023. The respect he earned from his peers and the love from his department stand as the greatest testament to his service.Â
Heard met his future wife, Rachael, at an off-campus party during her last year at Sonoma State College. She was attracted to his unmistakable confidence and realized he was a genuinely good person. They married and had two sons, Logan and Parker. Together they enjoyed hiking, bicycling, camping, hosting backyard barbeques, and ping pong tournaments. The boys were his life and everything he said and did was for their future. Their favorite family traditions were their annual Super Bowl parties, all things Christmas, and Thanksgiving dinner at the firehouse. He showed what it meant to work hard, to put family first, and to lead with integrity. He left a foundation of deep love, resilience, values, and kindness to his family that will live on in their lives. For his crew at the firehouse, he was the person you could always count on. He was a protector and a leader who will never be forgotten.Â
Fire Captain Kyle Heard is survived by his loving wife, Rachael, his sons, Logan and Parker, his mother, Jackie, his sister, Kendra, and many other cherished family members and friends.Â
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Heard family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.Â
