Memphis Fire Department, Tennessee • Line of Duty Death: July 19, 2023
On July 18, 2023, Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman responded to a call for a residential fire. Upon arrival at the scene, they were met with thick black smoke and heavy fire. The structure collapsed, trapping the firefighters inside, including Lt. Norman. They were rescued and rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Despite all efforts, Lt. Norman succumbed to his injuries on July 19, 2023. He was 51 years old and had served with the Memphis Fire Department for 20 years at the time of his premature passing. He had also served in the United States Air Force – Tennessee Air National Guard for 28 years.
Norman was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and grew up in West Memphis, Arkansas, with his parents and older brother. He enjoyed playing sports, especially basketball. Inspired by the service of his father and brother, Norman joined the Tennessee Air National Guard in 1992. He served with the 164th Aerial Port Squadron, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. He served multiple tours of duty overseas and in the United States, including two tours in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Following the path of his firefighter brother, Norman joined the Memphis Fire Department in 2002 and served for 20 years, moving up the ranks from Driver to Lieutenant. His life choices enabled him to serve his country and community and be a part of the brotherhood of military and first responders.
Norman met his future wife, Ashleigh, on a blind date. They married and had a son, Parker, of whom his father was very proud. He loved being with his family and enjoyed traveling and sporting events, especially his beloved Arkansas Razorbacks. Norman will be remembered as a hero who bravely served his city and his country, and a man who loved his family with all his heart.
Fire Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman is survived by his loving wife, Ashleigh, and his cherished son, Parker, along with many other dear friends and family members.
