Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina • Line of Duty Death: July 1, 2025
On July 1, 2025, Deputy Sheriff Frank “Devin” Mason and his fellow deputies responded to a 911 call for service regarding a wanted man at a residence. When the deputies arrived and searched the mobile home, they encountered the man, who was armed with a gun. During the encounter, two deputies and the suspect were shot. Deputy Mason and the suspect received fatal injuries. The other deputy survived the shooting. Deputy Mason was 27 years old and served with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina for seven months.
Mason was born in Whiteville, North Carolina, and had three sisters. They were a very close-knit family. He had great athletic abilities and loved playing tennis and football at West Columbus High School. After high school, he became a member of the Black’s Tire Team, working as a commercial service technician in both North and South Carolina. His dream to become a law enforcement officer became a reality when he graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in March 2025. He joined the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office in November of 2024. Mason wanted to make a change in the community. He wanted to set a good example for the children and protect and serve the people. This was his nature. He made you feel safe in this scary world and was an amazing, genuine, kind-hearted man. He was a man of faith who was dedicated to his family and his career.
Mason met his fiancé, Madison Church, through a mutual friend. She loved the way he didn’t need constant recognition for doing good. He was a hard worker who proved to be the calm in her storm. Their time together was precious. In April 2025, Madi gave birth to their cherished son, Brooks James Mason. Family was everything to Mason and he was a loving partner, father and son. He always gave 110% in everything he did. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and selfless service. He was a hero, in life and in his death.
Deputy Sheriff Frank “Devin” Mason is survived by his fiancé, Madison Church, his baby boy Brooks, his mother Shannon and stepfather John, his sisters Brandie, Amber and Crystal, and many other loving family members and friends.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Mason family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
