United States Army Specialist • Line of Duty Death: November 20, 2010

United States Army Specialist Matthew Wayne Ramsey was killed in action on November 20, 2010, while serving in Afghanistan.

Ramsey was born and raised in California and grew up exceptionally close to his parents, sister, and grandparents, who remained a central and influential part of his life. He lived full-time with his mother but always made it a priority to spend meaningful time with the family members he loved most. From a young age, Ramsey demonstrated a natural athletic ability and participated in several sports, including basketball and baseball, excelling through both talent and dedication. No matter what he pursued, he approached it with determination, discipline, and genuine passion, always giving his full effort and striving to do his best.

Although Ramsey initially hoped to pursue a career with the Los Angeles Police Department and greatly enjoyed participating in the Explorer program as a teenager, he ultimately felt a deeper calling to serve his country. Inspired in part by his grandfather, who served in the United States Air Force and shared an exceptionally close bond with him, Ramsey developed a profound sense of patriotism and commitment to service. During his first deployment, he wrote in an email that he felt called to serve the country he loved and to honor those who had sacrificed their lives to protect the freedoms enjoyed by others.

Ramsey left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered through his maturity, character, and genuine nature. People naturally gravitated toward him, recognizing a level of wisdom and responsibility far beyond his years. He gained the respect of sheriff’s officers during his time in the Explorer program, was highly regarded throughout basic training, and earned the appreciation of his manager while working at Baskin-Robbins. His dedication and leadership potential were quickly recognized, and he was honored as one of the select few chosen to attend Ranger School directly out of basic training, a distinction that reflected both his exceptional abilities and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Throughout his military career, Ramsey’s honorable service and dedication to his fellow soldiers and country were recognized through numerous awards and commendations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, Combat Action Badge, and Air Assault Badge.

Ramsey met his future wife, Mirella, through his stepsister when he was in eighth grade and she was a freshman in high school. Although they formed an immediate connection, they did not officially begin dating until his junior year and her senior year of high school. From that point forward, the two were inseparable. While Ramsey was away at basic training, they remained close through frequent letters, and during that time, he asked her to marry him upon his return home. Although he had been offered the opportunity to attend Ranger School, Ramsey chose instead to return home and begin their life together, a decision that reflected the deep love and commitment he had for his family.

Among Mirella’s most cherished memories are the early years of their marriage at Fort Campbell, their first and only duty station together. Before welcoming their first son, the couple lived simply in a small one-bedroom apartment, often sharing meals on the floor and spending evenings playing cards together. Though modest, those moments became some of the most meaningful of their lives. She also treasures watching Ramsey become a father, remembering the excitement and joy he felt each time they learned they were expecting a child.

Mirella and their children continue to honor Ramsey’s memory by sharing his story and carrying forward the values that defined his life. Through the love and support they show one another, they strive to preserve the kindness, strength, and selflessness he embodied so naturally. Mirella remains committed to ensuring their children know who their father truly was, not only through his service and sacrifice, but through the remarkable person he was at his core. By continuing to speak his name, supporting others who have experienced similar loss, and living by the example he set, they continue to carry forward Ramsey’s enduring legacy of love, service, and compassion.

United States Army Specialist Matthew Wayne Ramsey is survived by his devoted wife, Mirella, and their beloved children.
