United States Army Staff Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: September 13, 2013
United States Army Staff Sergeant Robert E. Thomas Jr. passed away on September 13, 2013, after succumbing to injuries sustained in an explosion while serving in Afghanistan.
Thomas grew up in California as one of nine children and the second oldest in a close knit, energetic family that shaped his character from an early age. Surrounded by constant activity and strong support, he developed a vibrant personality marked by a natural sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him. He had a remarkable ability to lift spirits and connect with others through his warmth and presence. His childhood was defined not only by his lively nature, but also by his dedication to teamwork and discipline through sports and years of involvement in the Boy Scouts. These formative experiences helped instill the determination, leadership, and strong work ethic that would guide him throughout his life.
Thomas chose to enlist in the United States Army with a strong sense of purpose, seeking to build a meaningful future while serving something greater than himself. He entered through the Delayed Entry Program in December 2005 while still in high school and transitioned to active duty in July 2006 after graduation. During his military career, he quickly distinguished himself through his strong work ethic, professionalism, and natural leadership abilities. Fellow soldiers remembered him as dependable, resilient, and deeply committed to those around him. Even in difficult conditions, his sense of humor and positive attitude helped lift morale and strengthen the bonds within his unit. As a Staff Sergeant, Thomas led by example, earning the respect and trust of both his peers and those he mentored.
Thomas’ distinguished military service was recognized through numerous awards and decorations that reflect his courage, leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty. His honors include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Army Good Conduct Medal, as well as the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He was awarded both the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Iraq Campaign Medal with a Bronze Service Star, in addition to the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon with Numeral 3. His combat service and exceptional proficiency were further recognized with the Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Marksmanship Qualification Badge at the Expert level. He was also a recipient of the Valorous Unit Award, the NATO Medal, and four Overseas Service Bars, each representing his dedication, sacrifice, and honorable service to the United States.
Thomas met his wife, Kristina, through a mutual service member just a few months before his first deployment to Iraq in 2007. Despite the distance, with Thomas stationed in Tennessee and Kristina in Texas, they developed a strong connection and began building a meaningful friendship. When Thomas returned home on rest and recuperation, they met in person for the first time, further strengthening their bond. Kristina was drawn to his vibrant personality, his warmth, and the genuine way he made others feel valued. He was approachable, full of life, and possessed a natural ability to turn even the simplest moments into lasting memories. What began as a friendship grew into a deep and enduring love, grounded in trust, respect, and shared values. After two years of long-distance commitment and frequent travel, Thomas and Kristina were married in 2009 and began building a beautiful life together.
Kristina holds many cherished memories of her time with Thomas, moments that reflect his joyful spirit and deep love for those around him. One New Year’s celebration in California stands out, where they were surrounded by family, gathered in the garage playing pool and listening to music. In true Thomas fashion, he brought laughter to everyone, dancing playfully and embracing the lighthearted spirit of the evening. It was a simple yet deeply joyful moment that continues to bring a smile to her face.
Another memory that Kristina holds close speaks to Thomas’ deep love and devotion as a father. Prior to his final deployment, knowing he would miss their daughter’s first birthday, he insisted on personally choosing her dress. With pride and care, he selected a beautiful pink and black formal dress, determined that she would have something special for her important day, even though he would not be there to see it. This thoughtful gesture remains a lasting reflection of his love and the meaningful role he played in his family’s life.
Thomas’ legacy is one of courage, love, and resilience that extends far beyond his time here. Within his family, he was a foundation of strength and unwavering love; among his friends, a source of loyalty and light; and in his community, a true example of selflessness and service. His impact continues to live on in the lives he touched, inspiring others to live with compassion, purpose, and strength each day. Remembered as courageous, selfless, and full of life, he consistently went above and beyond to bring joy to those around him. His memory is honored through the way his family continues to carry him forward, celebrating his life, sharing his stories, and living with the same generosity and love that defined him. Each year on his birthday, they gather to enjoy his favorite meal and dessert, reflecting on cherished memories. Thomas remains a constant and deeply cherished presence in their home and hearts, his spirit living on through their love, their traditions, and the profound legacy of courage, kindness, and devotion he left behind for all who knew and loved him.
