United States Army Private First Class • Line of Duty Death: November 12, 2022
United States Army Private First Class Thanooe P. Paul passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2022, after a courageous battle with service-connected small cell lung cancer attributed to toxic exposure from burn pits while serving in Iraq. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born on July 19, 1988, and grew up in Rhode Island alongside his four sisters, Crystal, Elizabeth, Joleen, and Sabrina. He was raised by his devoted mother, Donna, who instilled in him a deep sense of resilience and strength. Paul remained deeply close with his sisters throughout his life, a connection that never wavered. In high school, he played football, demonstrating both discipline and determination. Seeking greater opportunity and purpose, Paul enlisted in the United States Army in June 2011, where he found a strong sense of camaraderie and earned the respect of his fellow service members, who proudly nicknamed him “Battle.” He was a true patriot who served his country with honor and unwavering dedication.
During his military service, Paul was known for the lasting impact he had on those around him. He played a vital role in maintaining morale within his unit, bringing humor and optimism even in the most stressful moments of deployment and training. His steady presence helped keep his team connected and grounded, and he quickly became someone others looked to for reassurance. A natural leader, Paul led not only through his actions, but through the calm confidence and encouragement he consistently offered to his fellow service members. His dedication and service were recognized through numerous awards and decorations, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (Second Award), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Deployment Ribbon.
That same compassion and dedication carried into his life beyond the military. Inspired by his family, he went on to work with disabled adults, where he served as a positive role model through his patience, kindness, and genuine care for others. In the years that followed, Paul devoted himself wholeheartedly to his family, cherishing every opportunity to create meaningful moments together. He found joy in what mattered most: recording science experiments with his daughter so she could always look back and remember him, buying a home with his wife, and being active in their community. Whether through sports, Scouts, or dance, he remained deeply involved in his daughter’s life, always putting his family first. Paul loved cooking, fishing, hiking, traveling, and football. He proudly supported the New England Patriots, and Tom Brady was his favorite player. Above all, he was a family man who placed those he loved at the center of everything he did.
Paul met his wife, Amanda, through mutual friends, often crossing paths at gatherings before their relationship began. His persistence and genuine character soon won her over. She quickly came to see not only how handsome he was, but also what a truly kind and thoughtful person he was — always carrying himself as a gentleman with an uplifting outlook on life. Paul had a way of making everyone feel welcome, often saying he wanted those around him to have “the best day ever,” a sentiment he lived out most fully with his family. From the very beginning, he showed his thoughtfulness in meaningful ways, surprising Amanda on one of their first dates with painting supplies after remembering how much she loved to paint. Their life together was filled with intentional moments and cherished experiences, from a special 30th birthday trip to New York City to see The Lion King to family vacations where they made the most of every day. One of Amanda’s most treasured memories is watching Paul carry their daughter, Ava, in his arms after a long day at Disney, a reflection of the deep and loving bond they shared. Whether cooking meals on the grill, spending days swimming and fishing with family, or enjoying camping trips together, Paul found joy in creating experiences that brought everyone closer.
Paul will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, resilience, and deep commitment to those he loved. He worked hard to build a meaningful life, always striving to create something better for his family. Known for his kindness and selflessness, Paul consistently put others before himself, whether supporting his loved ones or serving others through his work with disabled adults. Even during his illness, he chose to live each day with purpose and to create lasting memories for those closest to him. A devoted father, his family meant everything to him, and some of the most cherished moments were the simplest ones, like gathering together while he cooked on the grill, with Ava proudly by his side helping to make what he would call “the best steak ever.”
His legacy continues to live on through the love and traditions he inspired. Amanda and their daughter Ava honor him in many ways, from celebrating Veterans Day and Memorial Day in tribute to his service, to visiting his resting place and preserving his memory through photos, videos, and treasured mementos. This year, Ava will participate in the Tough Ruck alongside her grandmother and her grandmother’s partner in honor of Paul. Amanda and Ava also participate in Wreaths Across America at Agawam Cemetery. Through these acts, and in the way they strive to live each day with the same kindness, determination, and love Paul embodied, his memory endures as a lasting source of strength and inspiration.
United States Army Private First Class Thanooe P. Paul is survived by his devoted wife, Amanda; their beloved daughter, Ava; his mother, Donna; and his sisters, Crystal, Elizabeth, Joleen, and Sabrina, along with extended family members and many dear friends who will continue to honor his memory.
