United States Army Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: November 10, 2009

United States Army Sergeant Benjamin W. Sherman made the ultimate sacrifice on November 10, 2009, while faithfully serving our country during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sherman grew up in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and was a beloved brother to his sister, Meredith and his half sister, Jessica. He shared a close bond with his family and deeply loved his mother, Denise, his father, Bill, and Bill’s significant other, Denise. As a young man, Sherman was known for being a little wild and a true goofball, bringing laughter and energy wherever he went. Despite his playful nature, he also understood when it was time to be serious and responsible. Throughout his life, he continually worked to do better, grow as a person, and make those he loved proud.

In August of 2006, following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Sherman joined the United States Army. He chose the military in search of something better for himself, and it held special meaning because he wanted to make his family proud. Known for his unwavering loyalty and dedication, he consistently supported his comrades, often making difficult choices while always putting his brothers-in-arms first. His selflessness, courage, and commitment to service were evident in everything he did, earning him the respect and admiration of those who served alongside him. Sherman’s dedication was recognized through numerous medals and commendations, including the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and Global War on Terror Service Medal.

Sherman met his future wife, Patricia, when they were very young, around six years old, and they later attended the same middle school. Over time, they grew close through middle and high school, still so young and discovering themselves. When Patricia stepped away because their lives were going in different directions, Sherman remained determined, showing remarkable maturity and devotion to Patricia. Gradually, she realized the depth of his commitment and personal growth.

On March 9, 2010, Patricia and Sherman had their beautiful daughter, Skylah. She was born four months after the passing of her father. Skylah is Sherman’s greatest legacy. Patricia and Skylah speak at local schools about Sherman’s sacrifice. Skylah attends the same high school her father attended, and the school staff love to share stories about Sherman and how wild and loving he was. His uniform is displayed in the historic Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and his story of bravery is shared with all who visit. Leaving behind an enduring mark of perseverance, Sherman always stood up for what was right. He faced every challenge with unwavering determination and never gave up, even when times were toughest. His memory lives on in the hearts of those he loved and in every life he touched, a lasting testament to a man who gave everything for others.

United States Army Sergeant Benjamin W. Sherman is survived by his loving wife, Patricia and their beautiful daughter, Skylah.
