United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal • Line of Duty Death: September 16, 2023
United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Adam Wood tragically lost his life on September 16, 2023, due to service-connected cancer.
Wood grew up in Wisconsin and was a third-generation Marine, enlisting in 2001. His commitment to diligence and leadership extended into his civilian career as a lineman, where he earned widespread respect from his colleagues. Wood frequently assumed leadership roles and cared for his crew as if they were family. He demonstrated exceptional knowledge and skill in resolving even the most complex power line issues. Many have shared the valuable lessons they carried with them throughout their careers and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have worked under Wood’s guidance.
Wood met his wife, Sara, while spending time in her hometown. After some persistence, she agreed to go to dinner with him, and from that moment, their connection quickly grew into a lasting relationship. At the time, Wood was in a union apprenticeship, and the early years of their relationship took them to many different places as they built their life together. Over the course of fifteen years, their life was filled with adventure, laughter, and deep love. Those years hold Sara’s most cherished memories, reflecting the enduring bond they shared and the life they built side by side.
Many of those cherished memories were made during the summers they spent traveling throughout the Midwest in their camper, often following where Wood’s work took them. The Fourth of July was his favorite holiday, and he celebrated it with unmatched enthusiasm each year. For Wood, there was no such thing as too many people, too much food, or too many fireworks. He loved gathering family and friends together to celebrate the freedoms he valued so deeply, and those joyful moments will be remembered for years to come.
Wood will forever be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, friends, and community. He was the kind of person who didn’t just offer to help; he showed up. Whenever someone needed support, they knew Wood would be there without hesitation. He had a gift for bringing people together, not only on special occasions but in the simple, everyday moments that became lasting memories. Wood loved to cook, and his smoker was rarely quiet. Friends and family knew him well for his smoked jerky, ribs, and pig shots—dishes he took great pride in sharing with others. His deep patriotism was evident in the way he connected with fellow service members. If Wood noticed someone wearing a veteran hat, shirt, or pin, he would always stop to talk, often spending hours sharing stories and camaraderie. His patriotism was a defining part of who he was, reflected in both his actions and the connections he made.
Today, Sara and their children continue to honor Wood’s memory through family traditions. They speak of him often, sharing stories, photos, and videos to ensure his presence remains a part of their everyday lives. Each year, they celebrate his birthday by gathering with family and friends, sharing cupcakes and memories with the neighborhood children who knew and loved “Uncle Adam.” Wood’s love for the Green Bay Packers lives on through his son, and Sara has embraced that passion as a way to stay connected to him and carry on a tradition that meant so much. His pride in displaying the American flag remains a lasting symbol of his patriotism. Sara plans to continue that tradition by installing a new, lasting flagpole, a daily reminder of Wood that brings both comfort and pride. Through these traditions, Wood’s legacy is carried forward in the lives they lead and in the love in their home.
