United States Army Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: November 16, 2007
United States Army Sergeant Steven C. Ganczewski was born on April 7, 1985, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and grew up in Niagara Falls, NY. Ganczewski was killed in action on November 16, 2007, while serving in Balad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He gave his life in service to his country at just 22 years old, leaving behind a legacy of courage, leadership, and unwavering devotion to his family and fellow soldiers.
Ganczewski enlisted in the United States Army in 2003 shortly after high school and proudly served as an Army Ranger with the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. From the beginning of his military career, he demonstrated exceptional discipline, strength, and determination. He was known as a mission-oriented leader—always first in and last out—who led by example and never asked of others what he would not do himself.
Throughout his service, Ganczewski embodied the Ranger Creed. He was respected by his peers for his reliability, humility, and fierce loyalty. He was a warrior in every sense of the word, yet compassionate, thoughtful, and deeply committed to those he served beside. His dedication to excellence made him a role model to younger Rangers and an anchor within his unit.
Ganczewski received numerous awards and honors for his service, reflecting his professionalism and bravery in combat. These recognitions stand as formal reminders of what those who knew him already understood: that he served with honor, integrity, and selflessness.
Beyond the uniform, Ganczewski was a devoted husband, father, and family man. He was the foundation of his family—their rock, protector, and guiding light. To his wife, Rachel, he was her one true love and greatest blessing. To his daughter, Makayla, he was a hero in every sense—strong, gentle, present, and full of love. He took pride in being a husband and father and cherished every moment with his family.
One of Rachel’s most treasured memories is their honeymoon, when Ganczewski allowed himself to fully live in the moment—setting aside the weight of the world and his responsibilities to simply be present, joyful, and in love. It was a reflection of who he was at his core: someone who knew how to balance strength with tenderness, duty with devotion.
Ganczewski was known for his strong moral compass, quiet confidence, and unwavering sense of responsibility. He was the kind of man others leaned on in difficult moments. Whether in combat, in friendship, or in family life, he was dependable, steady, and courageous. His awards and decorations included the Bronze Star Medal and Bronze Star Medal with “V” device for valor, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and four Army Achievement Medals. He also earned campaign and service awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon. His qualifications and skills were demonstrated by earning the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Jumpmaster Badge, and the Ranger Tab—a testament to his excellence as a Ranger and infantryman who served with distinction in multiple combat deployments.
Ganczewski lived a life of purpose, honor, and love. His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his legacy continues through the family he cherished, the soldiers he inspired, and the countless lives he touched. Though his life was far too short, his impact is immeasurable.
