United States Army Staff Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: September 14, 2021

United States Army Staff Sergeant Louis DePan was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident on September 14, 2021.

DePan was an only child, and his parents were dedicated foster parents, often opening their home to foster children throughout his childhood. During his formative years, he traveled extensively across the United States with his family, allowing him to experience much of the country by the time he reached high school. A dedicated and passionate soccer enthusiast, Louis developed a deep love for the sport early in life.

In 2004, while still in high school, DePan chose to enlist in the United States Army, setting in motion a path of service that would define the next chapter of his life. What began as an unexpected opportunity quickly became a meaningful commitment to his country. DePan went on to dedicate the next 17 years to military service, standing alongside his fellow soldiers with dedication and pride. Throughout his distinguished career, he earned numerous honors recognizing his leadership and professionalism, including the Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Achievement Medal (4th Award), Army Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Army Superior Unit Award. His service also included the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign stars and Arrowhead device, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal, reflecting a career marked by exceptional dedication and an unwavering commitment to those he served beside.

After returning from Fort Sill, DePan met his future wife, Courtney, while she was working as a bartender. DePan had been the designated driver for his friends that evening, but what began as a simple night out quickly turned into something far more meaningful. There was an immediate connection, and their easy conversations quickly grew into a deep and lasting love. Some of Courtney’s most cherished memories include the time they spent together in Germany and the joy of building their beautiful family together. The birth of their son was especially meaningful, as DePan had been deployed during the birth of their daughter. Becoming a father was one of the greatest joys of his life, and his children were the center of his world. He was deeply involved in their lives, always present, supportive, and incredibly proud of them.

DePan leaves behind a legacy defined by loyalty, unwavering determination, and a deep commitment to being a true team player. He had a natural ability to connect with others and could speak with anyone, often lifting the spirits of those around him. DePan set the tone wherever he was, bringing a sense of presence and connection to those he encountered. Four years after his passing, his memory remains a constant and guiding presence in the lives of his wife and children. They honor him each day by sharing stories about him, celebrating his birthday and holidays in his memory, and decorating the crash site in remembrance each year. Through these traditions, DePan’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts of his family and in the love and strength they carry forward each day.

United States Army Staff Sergeant Louis DePan is survived by his wife, Courtney, and their beloved children.
