On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Butler County EMS Paramedic Justin Lauppe responded to an emergency call in the line of duty. During that response, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. He passed away two days later, on Friday, May 16, 2025, at the age of 37. His EMS and First Responder career spanned 14 years, and he served with Butler County EMS in El Dorado, Kansas, for three of those years.
Lauppe was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and moved to Winfield, Kansas, at just three months old. An only child, he shared an exceptionally close and meaningful bond with his mother, Reta, who raised him with strong values that helped shape the man he became. He graduated from Winfield High School in 2006 and proudly represented his community at the Future Farmers of America National Finals in Livestock and Poultry Judging. A close family friend, who served as the Winfield Assistant Police Chief, became a mentor and guiding influence in his life. Through that relationship, he discovered a deep-rooted calling to serve others—a purpose that would guide him throughout his life and career.
Lauppe began his public safety career in 2009 as a Police Officer with the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Department in Eureka, Kansas. He later transitioned into emergency medical services, starting his EMS career with Winfield Area EMS and earning his Paramedic certification at Cowley Community College. He was also a certified law enforcement officer and a proud member of the Butler County Rescue and Dive Team.
Throughout his career, Lauppe was widely regarded as a pillar of his team—hardworking, dependable, and deeply compassionate. His unwavering commitment to saving lives never went unnoticed. For his service and dedication, he received four Life Saving Awards, as well as a Unit Citation, Honor Guard designation, Rescue Squad Ribbon, Remembrance Award, and recognition through the Leadership Development Program.
In 2013, Lauppe met his future wife, Heidi. From the very beginning, it was clear there was something special about him; his drive, focus, determination, and compassion for others stood apart. They married in 2015 and welcomed their daughter, Emery, who completed their family and became his greatest joy.
Justin Lauppe’s legacy is one of bravery, service, kindness, and unwavering dedication to helping others. He lived a life defined by purpose and selflessness, and his impact will continue to be felt by all who knew him and served alongside him.
