HOME COMPLETED - JANUARY 2026

United States Army Sergeant First Class Douglas William Franklin grew up in Anaheim, California, where he enjoyed a wonderful childhood surrounded by the magic of Disneyland and the nearby beaches, just a short bike ride away. From an early age, he developed a love for woodworking, a craft taught to him by his grandfather, whose guidance he treasures and whose memory he holds dear. Alongside woodworking, Franklin has always enjoyed golf and shotgun sports such as trap and sporting clays. His wife, Jill, first joined him in shooting sports when they were in their twenties, and together they continue to enjoy the activity today.

Franklin and Jill met at First Christian Church of Anaheim, where their shared faith and friendship blossomed into marriage. They were wed at their home church, a place that remains central to their lives.

In 1980, Franklin joined the United States Army, inspired by his father’s service as a Marine and the stories he grew up hearing. He wanted to do something greater than working in fast food, and felt called to serve his country. His military career led him overseas, where he served in Civil Affairs. Franklin found deep fulfillment in this role, knowing that his work made a tangible difference in the lives of others. He helped build girls’ schools in Yemen and assisted with drilling for clean water, projects that left lasting impacts on the communities he served.

On July 23, 2007, while deployed in Iraq, Franklin was injured by two mortar blasts that detonated just 15 feet away. The attack left him with a severe traumatic brain injury, tunnel vision, and legal blindness. Despite these challenges, his passion for woodworking remains strong, and he continues to enjoy shooting sports with Jill. For him, shooting is a sport where size and strength do not matter—only focus and precision.

The support Franklin and his family have received from the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has been life-changing. It has eased financial burdens and provided a renewed sense of hope and stability. With gratitude, Franklin expresses his heartfelt thanks for the generosity and support that have blessed his family.
